Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Mefenamic Acid is the non-proprietary name for a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), used to alleviate mild to moderate acute pain from nearly any cause.
On the market since the 1960s, it's possible to buy Mefenamic Acid under many brand or generic names. Perhaps the most widely recognized names are Ponstel or Ponstan, though there are many others.
Mefenamic Acid is considered suitable for use in patients age 14 and up; effects on younger patients are unclear. Elderly patients and those with preexisting medical conditions concerning the cardiovascular or gastrointestinal systems may need modified dosing, increased monitoring, or be advised to not buy Mefenamic Acid at all; there are numerous alternatives less likely to cause side effects in these patients.
As an NSAID, pregnant women should not buy Mefenamic Acid for use in the third trimester---NSAIDs are known to cause serious complications during childbirth if used in the third trimester. Short-term use in the first or second trimester, as well as while breastfeeding, is generally considered safe.
Using Mefenamic Acid
Mefenamic Acid is effective at minimizing or alleviating nearly all acute mild to moderate pain, including menstrual pain. The medication comes in tablets or capsules, which are interchangeable as long as the dosage is the same.
Treatment with Mefenamic Acid should not exceed 7 consecutive days without doctor approval; patients taking it longer will likely need to attend regular checkups to monitor for developing side effects. Some individuals do take it longer than 7 days, it simply requires extra care.
Treatment is strikingly similar in the vast majority of cases:
A missed dose can be taken as soon as remembered, as long as the next dose is pushed back 6 hours. Never take a double dose to compensate for a missed dose.
Mefenamic Acid & Alzheimer's
In 2015 a study was published in which it was found that Mefenamic Acid reversed the memory-loss symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease in mice, likely due to anti-inflammatory effects on the brain. While this is interesting, and further research is ongoing, mice are quite different from humans and it's not currently possible nor advisable to buy Mefenamic Acid to treat Alzheimer's in human patients. In part this is because many Alzheimer's patients are elderly, and risks associated with Mefenamic Acid are considerably more pronounced in elderly patients.
Adverse Effects
Like all NSAIDs, Mefenamic Acid can increase blood pressure which can lead to very serious complications in those who have high blood pressure already or other cardiovascular conditions. Mefenamic Acid, again like all NSAIDs, can also cause gastrointestinal bleeding, which can be fatal if severe. While unlikely to be a serious problem in otherwise healthy patients, those with a history of cardiovascular or gastrointestinal issues should use this product with caution, or not buy Mefenamic Acid at all, particularly if there is a history of:
A doctor should be consulted before use if the above are, or were, present in a patient. There are numerous less-dangerous alternatives that may be more suitable.
Mefenamic Acid can also interact with other medications, most notably:
Always check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking other medications with Mefenamic Acid---including seemingly innocuous over-the-counter varieties. Note that many over-the-counter cough and cold syrups may contain NSAIDs, which can quickly lead to overdose.
